Michael Harper, Senior Software Engineer

Michael Harper is a technical contributor to VizzVox, specifically in the areas of web services and client software integration.

Mr. Harper got his start in the computer industry on Prime minicomputers in the early 1980s. From there, he became interested in the Macintosh platform while also learning Unix. In 1988, he was instrumental in converting an international investment banking company from a network of Prime minicomputers to a distributed international network of PCs, Macintosh, and Sun computers. His experience in client/server application development began at this point, developing Macintosh client software using C++ and MacApp connecting with Oracle and Sybase on the back end. Throughout the 1990s, Mr. Harper provided technical muscle and experience to efforts such as the CommonPoint framework at Taligent, MacOS 8 at Apple, and a government-funded all-digital television studio written in Java at Sun Microsystems.

As Java became more prevalent, Mr. Harper provided enterprise Java leadership for a number of interesting projects, including a document processing system for Pacific Analyst in Manila, The Philippines, as well as a supply chain management system for shipping wine in the United States for New Vine Logistics in Oakland, CA. From there Mr. Harper engaged with AT&T Wireless to provide input on best practices for maintaining and partially redesigning their sales and customer service web site which was an industry leader in selling cellular phones and plans on-line. Most recently, Mr. Harper has been an enterprise architect for Symantec Corporation, overseeing the development of their global web site. In addition, he acted as technical lead guiding and contributing to the development of Symantec’s back-end licensing applications and services for their 2007 Norton product launches as well as Norton 360.

Mr. Harper lives in Bend, OR (Central Oregon on the east side of the Cascade mountain range) with his wife, son, daughter, dogs, and cat. When he is not in front of a computer, he enjoys skiing, mountain biking, hiking, camping, scuba diving, flying, and working on his 30-plus-year-old car.

Mr. Harper holds a bachelor of science degree in computer science from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA.
